Weekly update: holiday events, a cold snap, and a new start from With Strings Attached

The AAUW holiday luncheon was on Friday.

We long ago stopped having entertainment at the luncheon. We just enjoy the fellowship, food, and fundraising.  $508.50 from the silent auction and $200 from the quilt raffle go to AAUW Greatest Needs Fund.   $130 from 50/50 cash and $275 in outright donations go to our local scholarship for girls planning to major in a STEM field.

Judy P. won the quilt.  The raffle tickets were sold only at the luncheon this year. (In years past the quilt was displayed at the state fall conference but now that's on Zoom ...

Oh Scrap! Mixing Scraps with Panels from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I just finished sewing the binding on this fun scrappy quilt.
It is so cute, I had to share it today.

I had a panel that had some fun animals printed on it. They were small but all different sizes. Local quilter Chris used that panel with a bunch of her scraps to create this fun little quilt.  No pattern - just adding in bits and bobs of color until a quilt was born.

We put a colorful flannel covered in bugs on the back (thanks Nann) and Laura quilted it up for us.  We have a big delivery of kid ...

Weekly update: parties and scraps + reading from With Strings Attached

Friday evening:  the 151st annual Carthage College Christmas Festival.  The college chapel is a beautiful setting for the splendid music.

Rotary friends and family had dinner at a Kenosha restaurant beforehand.

Kaylynn, whose family is in the top photo, is a freshman at Carthage this year and in the orchestra.  Donna and I (lower photo) have known her since she was born.

Saturday began with the funeral for our Rotary friend Nate at a church in Waukegan.  It was a chilly service because the church furnace was on the blink.  (Ironically Nate was a long-time trustee so just a few ...

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been busy all week cutting flannel scraps into 2.5" x 4.5" rectangles.  I think all of the pink scraps are done and I have moved onto blue.

As I cut them, I am stacking them in a box so they are ready to sew.  I don't often get a chance to sit and sew but I did find time to make enough soft blocks for a quilt top.

I have 42 of these 8" blocks ready to be turned into a top. I have also cut more than enough rectangles to make the same size ...

Weekly update: a snowy end to November from With Strings Attached

The boys are back!

The nutcracker collection began with a gift from my mother shortly after we were married.  She gave us two or three more.   I've acquired the rest at TJ Maxx, estate/rummage/garage sales, and thrift shops.   They're all German.

I made Good Cheer in 2013 from swap blocks.

The rest of the nutcrackers are providing a backup chorus for the Christmas tree.

Just as forecast, it began snowing at noon Saturday and continued all night long.  This was the view from the front door this morning.  9" accumulation.

I shoveled the front stoop and ...

Oh Scrap! : Not my Work from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been working on my flannel blocks this past week but I haven't taken any photos.  I realized today that not only do I need to get the newsletter out, but I also need to write up the instructions and release the next block drive. So, I am taking an easy way out and sharing someone else's scrappy quilt.

Pam is currently our board secretary.  She made a bunch of Tula Pink quilts for her granddaughters. All those quilts generated a lot of scraps.  She has been using them to make quilts for Many Hands and Many ...

Weekly update: a finish and a good book from With Strings Attached

The thrifted shirts quilt is finished.

I made the rounds of local thrift shops and scored two twin sheet sets (flat and fitted) and two flat sheets.  They're all cotton.   I can usually differentiate between microfiber and cotton with just a glance (something about the sheen?) though some 60/40 blends can be deceiving.

I put one of them to use right away for the shirtings quilt.  It's the paisley.  I had to cut around some small stains.  I added the blue floral to make it wide enough.

It is futile to think I'll use up all ...

Oh Scrap! : Still Cutting Pink from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

A huge thanks to all of you who wished me well.  I am pretty much back to my old self.  I still have pain in my ear but at least I can move my head without falling over.

I am still working away at Mount Flannel when I have a chance.  I have been focusing on the pink scraps and anything new that needs attention.  I am not to add anything to my mountain of scraps!

Once I have all the rectangles I need for a block, I am just stacking them in a box to sew at a later ...

Weekly update: local history, bunco, a finish, and the other RSC project from With Strings Attached

The Zion Woman's Club fall Bunco fundraiser was Friday night. As club president I had a lot invested in the outcome and I am delighted to report that it was a great success.  If I added correctly, the gross income was $1950.   One winner was very lucky indeed -- she won $215 in the 50/50 cash raffle, $225 in the gift card raffle, and the quilt I donated.

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Colds and Covid have hit our area hard.  Almost everyone I know has some sort of bug they are fighting.  I myself caught a head cold - which led to an ear infection and burst eardrum - which led to vertigo.  I am not a happy camper right now.  Every time I try to get something done, dizziness makes it impossible and back to bed I go

.  Hopefully the pills do their thing soon and I am back to my regular self!

I did get a few more flannel scraps cut and some scrappy blocks made.  I have two patterns I am ...

Weekly update, part 1: placemats and more from With Strings Attached

I made time for only two walks this week, in and around meetings, when it was still warm and sunny.    The front came through Saturday night.  We had a dusting of snow and the Sunday high was in the mid-30's.

Left: Mr. and Mrs. Crane out for a promenade at Middlefork Forest Preserve on Wednesday afternoon.  I was that close to them.

I stopped at Middlefork on my way to Lake Forest Place where the AAUW book group meets.  This month we discussed Horse by Geraldine Brooks.  I listened to it earlier this year when Diann/Little Penguin recommended ...

Oh Scrap! : RWB String from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Finally, the end to a crazy busy week. You can bet I will be spending Sunday napping to catch up on much needed sleep.

We had our craft sale Friday and Saturday.  The turn out wasn't great but we still sold quite a few items.  What didn't sell will be stored for future sales - we will definitely do something similar again.

I didn't want to miss an Oh Scrap!, so I am just sharing one of the scrappy quilts we finished this week.

Here is a fun Veteran string quilt made from a combination of blocks sent ...

Weekly update: placemat palooza and more from With Strings Attached

There were about 20 trick-or-treaters on Friday afternoon.  The little kids are the cutest.  And most said "Thank you" without any coaching.   Three 11-year-old boys were wide-eyed at the bags of popcorn I gave out.  "You are the WINNER!!" one of them said.

Autumn colors and a wooly bear caterpillar at Illinois Beach State Park yesterday.   Bottom left:  two mullein sprouting new green leaves.  We haven't had a frost yet.

As so often happens, it takes an obituary or a funeral to reveal all of a person's accomplishments and how many lives that person touched.  Saturday afternoon I ...

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Windmills from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

In the recent newsletter, I shared my excitement over finally having a plan for how to deal with all the flannel scraps we have.  I have been slowly starting to cut and this weekend, I finished a few blocks.

I started with scraps that had pink and would be a good candidate for a you girl quilt.  I am cutting everything to 2.5" x 4.5" and giving myself the freedom to toss anything that I can't yield a piece that size.  Of course, as I was sewing these blocks, I remembered why I dislike sewing flannel but ...

Underfoot in Italy from With Strings Attached

I'll add this post to the Monday link ups because it's quilt design related.  I hope you'll scroll down to read the travelog post and leave a comment. Design Wall Monday  Sew and Tell Oh Scrap! Monday Musings

I could not resist taking pictures of the tile floors in Rome, Florence, and Venice.  My quilter's brain went to work right away figuring out how they were put together.

Don't turn me in!  Photography is strictly forbidden in the Sistine Chapel, but I covertly snapped photos of the floors.

Oh Scrap! : Marci's Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week was a bit crazy!  I received two giant boxes filled with all sorts of goodies.  These usually take me a while to get everything all checked in and put away.  My living room floor is about the only place I have to work now so things were a shambles for a few days.

Not complaining....but I didn't have time to play with any scraps.

But today I did get a big box from Marci filled with her scrappy blocks.  This time she sent four different versions of layouts.  So I did get to pet a bunch ...

Oh Scrap! : Some Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have way too many scrap/orphan block projects in the works right now.  I decided I need to get some of these finished before I can start anything new.

These scrappy blocks have been on my mind lately. They were made from a bunch of 2" HSTs that we received in the mail.  There are not enough blocks to make a traditional quilt so I am going to have to get create with how I lay them out.

I did finally decide to use this cream background fabric.  My plan is to lay them out in some a symmetrical ...

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

My week got away from me, and I didn't post any finishes.  So, I thought I would share some recent scrappy "treasures" I found around my house.  I have decided they can all go to Many Hands and Many Hearts.  Seeing them did make me miss digging through scraps.  So I spent a bit of time putting together some future scrap quilts - I can't start on them yet but I am hoping to soon!

This one really isn't a recent finish.  I have been going through all of my quilts that have never been used and decided ...

Weekly update: AIC, quilt show, the end of an era, a finish! and a flimsy from With Strings Attached

I've had ample opportunities to go downtown to see the Caillebotte exhibit at the Art Institute, but it took a "closing soon!" email to get me to do it on Friday.

Wealthy Chicagoans in the Gilded Age (1890's) bought Impressionists as modern and avant-garde, and relatively inexpensive.  They were patrons of the Art Institute and thus the museum developed its Impressionist collection.

"Paris Street, Rainy Day" was acquired in 1964 and has become one of AIC's most famous paintings.  Caillebotte painted it in 1877.

I had hoped to go to this famous intersection (Carrefour du Moscou) when ...

Oh Scrap! : Bowl Cozies from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

After all the recent scrap cutting, it is time to sew up the items I cut for!

The really big scraps I cut into 10" squares.  That is what was needed for the bowl cozies Many Hands and Many Hearts hope to sell at a holiday bazaar we have a table at.  I had a bolt of the Wrap-N-Zap batting needed for these items that I donated to the cause.  I was actually happy to get rid of it - things are way too overcrowded around here.  I think we had enough batting to make about 30 bowls.  I have been ...
